Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina

the biltmore house

One of my best tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to eat a big breakfast before arriving because most of the dining options near the Biltmore House and Gardens are expensive. Reservations are required in order to take advantage of the complimentary wine tasting that is included with your Biltmore ticket–but you can’t make a reservation until you arrive on-site. Your Biltmore admission ticket includes a complimentary wine tasting–be sure to take advantage of it (more details on how in the next section).

If you would like to learn more about the winery, you can purchase a separate behind-the-scenes tour or a chocolate and wine tasting experience. For those who are interested in local wineries, the Biltmore Winery is a fun thing to do at the Biltmore. However, the Biltmore Estate Wine Company wasn’t established until 1983. The Winery was built in the building that once held the Main Dairy, which was originally built in 1900.

Since Christmas is Biltmore’s busiest time of the year, you can expect tickets to go quickly. I recommend booking around 3-4 months in advance to ensure your spots. Plus, if you’re visiting during the summer months, consider grabbing a sweet treat at The Creamery. When purchasing your Biltmore Estate tickets, the best time is early morning or after lunchtime. When you select an available time, you can view how many spots are left for each ticketed timeslot.

Compare Overnight Stays

An overnight stay invites you and yours to explore it all at your leisure, where more time shared means more memories made. At the beginning, George Vanderbilt was the only person enjoying his books, art, and grand estate. The Biltmore Estate website notes that he was considered one of America's most eligible bachelors until he proposed to his wife, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser, in 1898. The story of the Biltmore estate starts with the man who dreamed it up, George W. Vanderbilt. The grandson of Cornelius "the Commodore" Vanderbilt, who built his fortune as a shipping and railroad magnate, Vanderbilt fell in love with the scenery of Asheville, North Carolina.

Discover the estate’s origin, its evolution from country home to beloved national treasure, and the family responsible for its creation and preservation. In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA. We had an absolute blast visiting the Biltmore Estate and would happly go again in the future–especially if we could schedule it so we had a chance to experience Christmas at the Biltmore.

This hotel is a must-visit in Asheville, especially if you’re going to be in town during the holidays. Although it’s not possible to stay in the guest rooms at the actual Biltmore House, you can spend the night nearby at The Inn on Biltmore Estate. This four-star luxury hotel is an excellent place for a romantic getaway with your partner. Just five miles from the Biltmore House, Antler Hill Village offers restaurants, stores, and seasonal exhibits. Instead of just touring the home and leaving, consider a visit to Antler Hill Village—especially if you’re traveling with kids, as the Farmyard is a must-see. You’ll learn about the Vanderbilt family, the construction of the Biltmore Estate, and the servants who lived on the grounds.

Think of the Biltmore Estate as a day trip, not a one-off attraction.

If you want to guarantee the day and time slot you want, then you can really only do that by ordering in advance. When the Vanderbilt’s would have been living in the estate full time, guests would have driven right up to the front of the house. From the parking areas, you take a shuttle to the front of the estate home.

Then, on Christmas Eve 1895, the grand estate opened to Vanderbilt's family and friends for the first time. In the 1880s, Vanderbilt set out to build a grand estate in Asheville. He slowly acquired 125,000 acres of land — 195 square miles — by purchasing some 700 parcels, including 50 farms, according to The Citizen-Times. There’s a veritable castle in the heart of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains called the Biltmore Estate. Elegant and grand, it looks like it belongs in a French fairytale.

After spending a day at the Biltmore House and Gardens, one of the best tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to visit Antler Hill Village! Antler Hill Village is where the Biltmore Winery is located and is also home to restaurants like Bistro, Cedric’s Tavern, and Village Social.

If you want a taste of Biltmore style luxury, enjoy a four star meal at The Dining Room. Or enjoy a classic European pub atmosphere at Cedric’s Tavern and sample some American gastro-pub fare. At most of the restaurants you’ll either want to make a reservation ahead of time or put your name on the waitlist ahead of when you want to eat.

Of course, you’ll also see the stunning view from the rooftop and check out some of the balconies. Moreover, seniors (65+) receive a discount on daytime admission on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Reception & Ticketing Sales Center.

It was the initial home of the Atlanta Historical Society and the meeting place for many of the city’s civic organizations. For more than 30 years, WSB, the South’s first radio station, broadcast from its studios within the hotel and the radio tower on the hotel roof became a landmark on the city skyline. Facing increased competition from Atlanta’s modern downtown hotels, The Biltmore was sold to a series of owners beginning in the 1960s who were unable to revitalize the business.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned Biltmore buff, my mission is to make sure your visit is absolutely epic. Spend as much time as you wish immersed in another era, and return as many times as you like. Unlimited visits with no reservations required means you don’t have to miss a thing. As Explore Asheville notes, there's much more to the Biltmore Estate than the house itself (though the house is certainly one of the main draws).

A complimentary wine tasting experience is always included with your Biltmore tickets. As we mentioned before, if this is something you’d like to take advantage of, we suggest making your reservation for your tasting as soon as you get on the estate. Just outside of the Walled Garden is the large Biltmore Conservatory. No matter what time of year you walk through the doors, you’ll be created by warm temperatures.

When analyzing data you can encounter a situation where you can’t tell whether, for example, an interaction between 2 or 3 factors causes a particular effect. You either have to use your existing knowledge to decide or, if necessary, do more experiments. The importance of statistical quality control was taken to Japan in the 1950s by W Edward Deming. This started what Montgomery calls a second Industrial Era, and sometimes the quality revolution. After the second world war, Japanese products were of terrible quality.

By picking the right design in the beginning, you’ll be saving yourself tons of work and grief when it comes to the analysis. Which means that you don’t have to design a single experiment—or pick a single DOE design—that will answer all your questions. Stay with us and we’ll explain how the DOE stage is crucial for narrowing down which design you choose, and we’ll go through these basic categories in detail.

This is an essential component of any experiment that is going to have validity. If you are doing a comparative experiment where you have two treatments, a treatment and a control, for instance, you need to include in your experimental process the assignment of those treatments by some random process. You need to have a deliberate process to eliminate potential biases from the conclusions, and random assignment is a critical step. If you have a treatment group and a control group then, in this case, you probably only have one factor with two levels.

For example, these concerns can be partially addressed by carefully choosing the independent variable, reducing the risk of measurement error, and ensuring that the documentation of the method is sufficiently detailed. You must complete all course contact hours and successfully pass the learning assessment to obtain CEUs. Specify how you can manipulate the factor and hold all other conditions fixed, to insure that these extraneous conditions aren't influencing the response you plan to measure. In this course we will pretty much cover the textbook - all of the concepts and designs included. I think we will have plenty of examples to look at and experience to draw from.

The relationship between slope gradient and sediment transport performance of subgrade depends on the height of subgrade and the type of subgrade section. For the semi-filled uphill flow subgrade, the sediment transport performance of the subgrade is negatively correlated with the subgrade slope. The research conclusions provide valuable scientific guidance for the design of sand control embankment structures tailored to local conditions for desert highways.

Thus, when everything else except for one intervention is held constant, researchers can certify with some certainty that this one element is what caused the observed change. In some instances, having a control group is not ethical. This is sometimes solved using two different experimental groups. When factors or levels increase, full factorial designs can become infeasible—even in sophisticated, high-capacity facilities.

So, you can determine main effects and any order of interaction. Full factorial designs, however, involve a large number of runs, increasing exponentially as the number of factors increase. The study of the design of experiments is an important topic in metascience. Main concerns in experimental design include the establishment of validity, reliability, and replicability.

Certificate issuance exceptions include courses with outstanding credentialing entities (i.e. OSHA or PADI).

Applied Regression Analysis

You can use fractional factorial designs when you have a large number of factors to screen, or where resources are limited. One of the most important requirements of experimental research designs is the necessity of eliminating the effects of spurious, intervening, and antecedent variables. But there could be a third variable (Z) that influences (Y), and X might not be the true cause at all. Z is said to be a spurious variable and must be controlled for.

In other words, interactions between 2 factors—are more common and more influential than higher order effects (typically, interactions between more than 3 factors). Full factorial designs are often most appropriate when screening has identified a few important factors to optimize, or when using liquid handling automation affording an increase in throughput. Many factorial designs add a single central point for each factor to help determine whether there is curvature. This can help you better understand the experimental space. Fractional factorial DOE is not, however, suitable for sophisticated modeling. But when you’re new to DOE, there’s nothing worse than having too many choices. Instead of covering all the designs in detail, we’ll start you off by covering the most commonly used and important DOE designs (Figure 1).

The Japanese car industry adopted statistical quality control procedures and conducted experiments which started this new era. Total Quality Management (TQM), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) are management techniques that have come out of this statistical quality revolution - statistical quality control and design of experiments. Taguchi, a Japanese engineer, discovered and published a lot of the techniques that were later brought to the West, using an independent development of what he referred to as orthogonal arrays. In the West, these were referred to as fractional factorial designs.

Next, we evaluate what will happen when we fix the volume at 550 ml (the optimal level) and start to change the second factor. In this second experimental series, the pH is changed from 2.5 to 5.0 and you can see the measured yields. Design of experiments (DOE) is a rigorous methodology that enables scientists and engineers to study the relationship between multiple input variables, or factors, on key output variables, or responses.

These plans provide details on their commitments to community and labor engagement, quality job creation, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and benefits to disadvantaged communities as part of the Justice40 Initiative. The FEED studies will include community engagement input in identifying alternative routes and applicable safety mitigation measures, where appropriate. This app provides a help file that introduces design of experiments and explains dialog settings.

In order to understand why Design of Experiments is so valuable, it may be helpful to take a look at what DOE helps you achieve. A good way to illustrate this is by looking at an alternative approach, one that we call the “COST” approach. The COST (Change One Separate factor at a Time) approach might be considered an intuitive or even logical way to approach your experimentation options (until, that is, you have been exposed to the ideas and thinking of DOE). But of course, this results in trade-offs and limitations.

His methods were successfully applied and adopted by Japanese and Indian industries and subsequently were also embraced by US industry albeit with some reservations. The independent variable of a study often has many levels or different groups.

The Golden Guard Fandom

hunter the owl house

After learning what he is, Hunter camps out at Hexside, collecting books on grimwalkers and having Flapjack find food for him. After seeing his poor living conditions, Gus gives Hunter his sandwich as Principal Bump calls an assembly when Adrian Graye Vernworth, the head of the illusion coven, delivers a decree that all witches must be placed in a coven before the Day of Unity. When Adrian reveals he is going to force the students into covens, Gus unintentionally creates a school wide illusion and Hunter arrives and drags Gus away. During his time in the emperor's court, Hunter wore an ivory-colored hooded cloak with a golden triangle clasp, like other members of the Emperor's Coven. Under the cloak was a dark yellow long-sleeved tunic with a golden-yellow short-sleeved shirt over it and a dark brown belt, black leggings, dark brown gloves, and boots.

He is apparently a "genius teen prodigy" among the members of the Emperor's Coven, implying him to be intelligent and resourceful at magic, which serves as the reason for his high rank despite his age. After becoming stranded on the Human Realm, Hunter and the others are offered shelter at Luz's house by Camila. He is thankful for her hospitality and tries to repay her though cooking and sewing. During the Haunted Hayride, Hunter told Luz that he and the group planned a surprise for her in gratitude for all she and Camila did for them. After Belos possessed Hunter and he broke free, Camila jumps into the water to save him from drowning.

Return to the Demon Realm

They later show gratitude for him by allowing him to hide out in the Healing homeroom and later showing concern for where he has been. Later on, they appear to be on friendlier terms, he shows general concern for her after what happened in Belos’ mindscape as they agree to keep each other's secrets, and he chooses to help her in the battle against Belos, while Luz tries to protect him from Belos by allowing herself to be captured in his place. After teleporting to the Titan skull, Hunter has made amends with his friends and returned to his cheerful self. After Flapjack gives his life to save Hunter's, he becomes despondent as he mourns his palisman, but insists on finishing the fight they started for Flapjack's sake. Caleb Wittebane is the human that Hunter, like the previous Golden Guards, was cloned from as a grimwalker by Emperor Belos.

Family information

Lilith and Hunter both once belonged to the Emperor's Coven, with Hunter taking her role as Coven Head once she defected. They have an unknown past history, which is implied to be negative as Lilith was shown to be jealous of, and to hold a form of contempt against Hunter, calling him a "brat" in "Separate Tides" and attempting to throw away his poster when Luz asked her about him. Lilith also described knowing him as "unfortunate" and saying that he always got special treatment for being the "genius teen prodigy". When Hunter gets possessed by Belos, Luz tried to attack him without harming him. By the end of "Thanks to Them", Luz reveals to everyone that she did help the Collector and Hunter is the first to assure her that it wasn't her fault because Belos tricked her and if it wasn't for her, they wouldn't have a chance to fight back. She later attempts to kidnap him after her demotion to give to Belos, believing that this will return her to her previous position or perhaps even cause her to become the Emporer's new right-hand.

Golden Guard

Unbeknownst to them, a remnant of Belos follows Hunter to the Human Realm and ends up possessing him, nearly killing his friends and Flapjack in the process. This gives Hunter the strength to finally stand up to his uncle, and he sacrifices himself in an attempt to defeat him once and for all. Belos, weakened but not dead, returns to the Demon Realm, and Hunter and his friends follow closely behind, vowing to honor his fallen palisman.[9] After the group escape capture by the Collector, Hunter helps evacuate the trapped residents from the Isles' destruction.

Soon, Kikimora is on the move and Luz returns the Golden Guard's staff before activating the glyph combo. She forgets that the Golden Guard has to take the palismen to the Emperor, and he prepares to double-cross her now that the staff is back in his possession. Visibly hurt, the Golden Guard lowers his staff and reveals his name, "Hunter".

In season two, Amity is put upon by Odalia and Alador when they expel her friends from Hexside for being a "bad influence" on her. But when they endager Luz when she tries to get her and her friends back into school, she stands up to Odalia and gets them back into Hexside.[8] She acknowledges that Luz's arrival changed her for the better, and redyes her hair lilac because Odalia forced her to have her hair dyed green to match with her siblings. Willow became his first genuine friend and taught him a breathing technique, which Gus later shares with Hunter. His illusionary abilities are also revealed to be rather powerful, but can become untamed if he is stressed or upset. He befriends Hunter, who becomes another genuine friend.[47] At the end of "King's Tide", Gus flees to the human realm with Luz, Amity, Willow and Hunter.[16] He eventually returns along with Luz and the rest of the gang to help defeat the Collector, and eventually, Belos.[17] In the epilogue, Gus becomes a teacher in the wild magic university.

One day, he looks at himself in the mirror and is startled because of his shoulder length hair, with it reminding him of both the man he is a clone of and Belos. He would notice Flapjack pecking around the floor of the Old House, but he would not tell Hunter what he was looking for. However, Gus creates an illusion to make Hunter and Luz take on each others' appearance and she grabs Luz instead. After Alador destroys the factory and Odalia leaves, he and the others head to Kikimora's airship where the illusion wears off and Gus reveals Luz told him to mask her as Hunter.

Number of seasons

Following Belos' final demise, Hunter chooses to remain on the Isles and work to rebuild society. The Owl House follows Luz, a self-assured teenage girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to a magical world where she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda's apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting.

He later discovered that he inherited Flapjack's powers and eventually erected a memorial to honor Flapjack for helping him find his own path. The two worked together, along with Willow and Gus, to free Amity and her siblings. Before facing off against Odalia and Kikimora, Luz has Gus create an illusion to make her and him switch appearances so that she would be taken to Belos instead of him. At the end of the episode when the truth was revealed, Hunter was expressively worried and apologized, saying that it all happened so fast and he didn't realize what was happening until she was gone. After Luz is resurrected and fights Belos with King and Eda, he, Willow, Gus, and Amity use glyphs drawn by Camila to save the puppets.

Hearing this, Hunter gives off a golden aura and teleports out of the vines and comforts Willow, saying she means a lot to him. After getting her to let out her frustration, he teleports her and Gus outside and they realize he has Flapjack's teleportation powers. He then teleports them out of the way when Luz's newly hatched palisman unleashes an energy blast. Kikimora, who has been posing as Boscha's advisor, appears and attacks the group. He catches Willow after she is knocked out of the sky and helps the others create the glyph pattern as Boscha and the students of Hexside arrive and fend off Kikimora. Luckily for the Golden Guard, Hexside is holding a palisman adoption day, and in the middle of the night, he uses his ship to steal the palismen, not knowing that Luz is among them.

After managing to reach Gus, Hunter says he understands what it's like getting tricked and that he can't trust himself, he says he spent his entire life believing what he's been doing was something good or someone good, but it was a lie, and that there was a part of him that wanted to believe it, but promises that he is Gus' friend. Hunter tries to do the breathing technique for Gus, but Hunter does it wrong and makes whistling sounds. At the end of the episode, he tells everyone at Hexside that Belos has been lying to everyone about wild magic and the Day of Unity, and then tells them the whole story. In "Labyrinth Runners", Hunter has been living at Hexside since he ran away and is found by Gus. Gus asks Hunter if he knows where Luz is, he surprised and worried that Luz isn't with Eda and is missing.

However, it was soon revealed that Darius lashed out like that because he wanted the young Golden Guard to be more like his predecessor, to rebel a little and to have a life and friends outside of the Emperor's Coven. When Hunter showed a willingness to rebel, Darius gave him a scroll and helped him set up a Penstagram account, in addition to keeping Flapjack, his palisman, a secret from Belos. Months later, when Hunter returns to the Demon Realm, Darius welcomes him with head pats, and appears to look after him in the epilogue.

When Willow recruited Hunter to join her flyer derby team, the two quickly became friends. Willow was annoyed by Hunter saying that their other teammates were "pathetic", but she quickly showed him how capable they were. After Hunter tried to recruit Willow into the Emperor's Coven against her will, he quickly realized his mistake and helped her escape from Darius' blimp. Despite Hunter's initial betrayal, Willow is shown to have forgiven him and still consider him her friend, looking forward to his next day off.
